The Magnificent Marquise... Elegant Since 1745 In 1745, Louis XV of France conferred the title of ÒMarquiseÓ on his mistress, Madame de Pompadour and she instantly became known simply as Òthe Marquise.Ó This scandalous act coincided with the introduction in Paris of a new fancy boat-shaped diamond with curved sides and pointed ends originally called the ÒnavetteÓ meaning Òlittle boat.Ó This elegant shape was quickly rechristened as the ÒmarquiseÓ to honor Madame Pompadour and her new title. The beautiful marquise diamond is a brilliant cut with 58 facets which display pinpoint flashes of fiery brilliance. It also has a larger ÒlookÓ because the facets are larger on the long sides of the diamond. The marquise diamond works beautifully in contemporary jewelry pieces where it is used as a center stone with ovals and rounds as accents. ItÕs also attractive in rings with side stones of tapered baguettes or trillion-cut diamonds. In any setting the marquise has an elegant look that is indeed fit for royalty. |
